In a small town called Shidlaghatta in Karnataka, India, a boy named Narayana Murthy was born in 1946. His family wasn’t rich, but they were rich in values — honesty, education, and simplicity were the pillars of their life. Murthy grew up in an environment where dreams were encouraged, even if resources were limited.

From a young age, Murthy was a bright student. He loved mathematics and was fascinated by the logic and structure behind every problem. But behind that sharp mind, there was also a heart full of ambition — he wanted to do something big, not just for himself, but for his country.He studied engineering at the National Institute of Engineering, Mysore, and later pursued his master's at the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur. At that time, India was still struggling with poverty and unemployment, and most young talents dreamed of going abroad. Murthy too had an opportunity to move overseas — but destiny had different plans.

Early in his career, Murthy worked in Paris on an ambitious project related to designing a real-time operating system. It was here that an incident changed his life forever. One day, while traveling through Eastern Europe (then under communist rule), Murthy was falsely accused and jailed without food or water for days. During those dark hours, he reflected deeply — and he realized that capitalism, when practiced ethically, could be a force for good. It could lift people out of poverty.

When he returned to India, he had a fire inside him: he would build something here, in his own country.But the journey was anything but easy. Murthy didn’t come from money. In fact, when he decided to start his company in 1981, he had to borrow ₹10,000 from his wife, Sudha Murthy — a woman who not only supported him financially but emotionally stood beside him when nothing seemed certain.

With six of his friends, Murthy started Infosys in a small apartment. They had no fancy office, no wealthy investors, no connections in high places. All they had was a shared dream — to build a company based on trust, integrity, hard work, and excellence.

The early days were brutal. There were moments when salaries were delayed, when projects failed, when the future looked terrifyingly uncertain. Many times, they stood at the edge of giving up. But Murthy’s leadership was different — he led with compassion. He believed that success was about people, not just profits.In the 1990s, when India liberalized its economy, Infosys was ready. They rode the wave of globalization, bringing Indian talent to the world stage. Infosys became the symbol of a new, confident India.

Murthy introduced ideas that were revolutionary for Indian companies at that time:

Employee stock options (sharing wealth with employees)

Transparency in business operations

Global delivery model (using Indian talent for international projects)

Under his leadership, Infosys grew from a tiny startup to a billion-dollar company, employing thousands, inspiring millions.But what truly sets Narayana Murthy apart isn’t just the success he achieved — it’s the humility he maintained. Even at the height of his success, he lived simply, spoke softly, and always credited his team rather than himself.

He once said,

           Murthy proved that dreams backed by ethics, hard work, and patience could move mountains. He showed the world that you don’t need to be born rich to create an empire — you need a clear conscience, a strong will, and a heart that refuses to give up.

           Today, Infosys stands tall, and Murthy is respected as one of the greatest entrepreneurs India has ever produced. His life reminds us: no matter where you start, what matters most is where you decide to go.
